Widgets: Clock, Tasks, Calendar and More

TL;DR Widgets put a clock, the weather, your tasks, today's meetings and a notepad next to your bookmarks. Turn them on in Preferences › Widgets. Calendar and Weather are part of Speed Dial 2 Pro.

Turning widgets on

  1. 1
Open Speed Dial 2 Preferences (the menu icon in the top-right corner) and choose Widgets.
  2. 2
Switch on "Show widgets on your new tab page".
  3. 3
Switch individual widgets on or off, and drag a widget by its ⠿ handle to change the order.
The Widgets section in Speed Dial 2 Preferences

Under Position you can place the widgets in any corner of the page. Background controls how they sit on your theme: Auto adds a soft blur only when you use a background image, so the text stays readable.

Note: Widgets need some room next to your bookmarks, so they hide when the browser window is narrower than about 1100 pixels. Make the window wider and they come back.

The widgets

  • Clock and date: the time, today's date and an optional greeting with your name. Choose 12-hour or 24-hour time, or leave it on Automatic.
  • Weather (Pro): the current temperature, today's high and low, and a heads-up when rain or snow is likely later in the day. Search for your city in the widget's settings.
  • Tasks: a simple to-do list. Type and press Enter to add a task, double-click a task to edit it and drag tasks to reorder them. Completed tasks disappear on their own after a week, or right away with Clear completed.
  • Today's calendar (Pro): your remaining meetings for today, with a Join button for video calls. See below for how to connect it.
  • Notes: a scratchpad for anything you want to keep in sight. Web addresses you type become clickable links.
  • Space: an empty block that pushes the widgets below it to the bottom of the page.

Connecting your calendar (Pro)

The calendar widget reads your calendar through a private iCal link. You don't sign in to Google or Microsoft in Speed Dial 2, and the link only lets it read your events, never change them.

First copy your calendar's iCal link (the guides below show where to find it). Then open Preferences › Widgets in Speed Dial 2, paste the link into Today's calendar and click Connect.

Good to know

  • Several calendars: add up to five, for example work and personal.
  • Updates: every 15 minutes, or right away with the refresh icon.
  • Join button: appears five minutes before a video call (Google Meet, Zoom, Teams and more).
  • Keep the link private: anyone who has it can see your events. If it leaks, click Reset in Google Calendar and paste the new link.

Where your data is stored

Your tasks, notes and calendar links are saved only in the browser you use. They don't sync to your other devices and aren't part of exports or backups. Your widget settings, such as which widgets are on and your city, follow your other preferences.

Troubleshooting

  • "Couldn't read this calendar": make sure you copied the whole secret iCal address, not the public one or the calendar ID. It usually ends in basic.ics.
  • A meeting is missing or outdated: changes can take a few minutes to reach the iCal link. Click the refresh icon on the widget.
  • I don't see Calendar or Weather: these widgets are part of Speed Dial 2 Pro.
