Website Thumbnails Are Not Captured

Last updated: January 11, 2025

TL;DR In Firefox, enable "Run in Private Windows" permission for Speed Dial 2 to capture thumbnails. Go to about:addons, find Speed Dial 2, and enable the permission.

Firefox: Enable "Run in Private Windows"

Firefox requires an extra permission for extensions to capture website thumbnails. Without this permission, Speed Dial 2 cannot take screenshots of your bookmarked pages.

To enable thumbnail capture in Firefox:

  1. Type about:addons in your address bar and press Enter
  2. Find Speed Dial 2 in the list of extensions
  3. Click on Speed Dial 2 to open its settings
  4. Scroll down to "Run in Private Windows"
  5. Select "Allow"

After enabling this permission, Speed Dial 2 will be able to capture thumbnails for your bookmarks.

Why is this permission needed?

Firefox treats thumbnail capture as a privacy-sensitive feature. To take a screenshot of a webpage, the extension needs permission to run in private browsing mode—even if you're not using private browsing.

This is a Firefox-specific requirement. Chrome and Edge do not require this extra step.

Still not working?

If thumbnails still aren't being captured after enabling the permission:

  • Refresh the thumbnail - Right-click the bookmark and select "Refresh thumbnail"
  • Check if the site blocks screenshots - Some websites (like banking sites) prevent screenshot capture for security
  • Try a manual screenshot - You can upload a custom image for any bookmark

Chrome and Edge users

If you're using Chrome or Edge and thumbnails aren't appearing:

  • Make sure the bookmark URL is correct and the website loads properly
  • Try refreshing the thumbnail by right-clicking the bookmark
  • Some sites may block thumbnail capture for security reasons
