# Speed Dial 2

> Speed Dial 2 is a browser extension for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Brave that replaces the new tab page with a customizable, productivity-focused dashboard of visual bookmarks. First launched in 2011, it has surpassed 1 million downloads and is used by professionals at companies including Apple, Uber, Nike, Adobe, Amazon, and Netflix. Praised by Lifehacker as "The Best New Tab Page."

## What Speed Dial 2 is

Speed Dial 2 lets you save and organize your favorite websites as visual bookmark tiles on a beautiful new tab page. It is free to use, with an optional Speed Dial 2 Pro subscription ($12/year) that adds cross-device sync, automatic backups, premium themes, custom fonts, group sharing, and mobile access.

With Speed Dial 2 you can:

- Save and organize frequently visited websites as visual bookmarks
- Categorize bookmarks into groups (e.g. Work, Personal, Hobbies)
- Customize appearance with themes, backgrounds, colors, and fonts
- Access browser bookmarks and recently closed tabs through a slide-out sidebar

Important distinction: Speed Dial 2 bookmarks are separate from your browser's native bookmarks. They are stored within the extension (and synced to your Speed Dial 2 account if you are a Pro user), not in the browser's built-in bookmark system. The website speeddial2.com shows a read-only view of synced bookmarks and is used for account management, mobile access, and shared groups — daily use happens in the browser extension's new tab page.

## Features

### Getting started / onboarding
- First-run wizard suggests up to 7 of your most-visited sites to add, offers a choice of background, and (on Firefox) requests thumbnail-capture permission.
- Sign in at any step to restore an existing account.

### Adding bookmarks
- Click the "+" button on the page.
- Choose from a built-in list of popular websites (multi-select).
- Add multiple URLs at once by pasting a list (one per line), with optional screenshot capture.
- Save the current page from the browser toolbar popup.
- Right-click any webpage and choose "Speed Dial 2" from the context menu.
- Keyboard shortcut: `Ctrl+Shift+S` (Windows/Linux) or `Cmd+Shift+S` (Mac).
- Thumbnail options: website logo (auto-detected), page screenshot capture, custom image URL (Pro), or uploaded image (Pro).

### Managing bookmarks
- Edit or delete via right-click context menu.
- Move bookmarks between groups by drag-and-drop onto a group name, or via bulk selection.
- Reorder by drag-and-drop (when ordering is set to Manual).
- Multi-select with `Ctrl`/`Cmd` + click for bulk move/delete.
- Open in current tab (default) or new tab (`Ctrl`/`Cmd` + click).
- Visit tracking: counts how often each bookmark is opened; can be shown on tiles and used for sorting.
- Maintenance tools: resolve duplicates, resolve bookmarks without thumbnails, and reload all thumbnails (Pro).

### Groups
- Organize bookmarks into named groups; everyone starts with a default "Home" group.
- Create groups via the header "+", right-click menu, or Preferences > Groups.
- Edit, delete, and reorder groups (Manual ordering) by drag-and-drop.
- "Show on this device": hide selected groups on a specific device while keeping them synced — useful for separate Work/Personal contexts.
- Share groups to the web with a public view or edit link (Pro).

### Search
- Press `/` or click the search icon to instantly search bookmark titles and URLs across all groups.
- Results appear as you type; Enter navigates to the matching bookmark's group; `Escape` clears.

### Sidebar
- Slide-out drawer revealed by hovering the right edge of the screen.
- Browser Bookmarks panel: browse and search your browser's native bookmarks (requires bookmarks permission).
- Recently Closed Tabs panel: restore up to 25 recently closed tabs individually or all at once (requires sessions permission).

### Focus Mode
- Blocks distracting websites; visiting a blocked site shows a focus reminder screen.
- Predefined categories: Social Media, Video & Streaming, Email & Messaging, News, Shopping, Games, Entertainment, Dating — block whole categories or individual sites.
- Add custom domains to block.
- Schedule Focus Mode to turn on/off automatically by time and day of week (Pro).

### Customization
- Theme mode: Auto (follows system), Light, or Dark — with fully independent settings for light and dark themes.
- Backgrounds: choose from free and premium themes, set background color, size (original/contain/cover), position, repeat, and opacity. Upload custom backgrounds (Pro).
- Colors: customize bookmark background/inside/text/border colors and UI background/text colors.
- Fonts: 100+ Google Fonts and font-size scaling 80%–140% (Pro); system font by default.
- Layout: 3–20 columns, adjustable spacing (0–32px), grid width (640–3200px, good for ultrawide monitors), vertical centering, optional "+" button, and Compact Layout (minimalist header, the current default — can be turned off to restore prominent group tabs).
- Bookmark appearance: ordering (Manual, Most visited, Newest, Oldest, Alphabetical), show/hide titles and visit counts, text alignment, rounded corners, and padding.

### Browser popup, keyboard shortcuts, and context menu
- Toolbar popup saves the current page to a chosen group with a screenshot, including keyboard navigation and "create new group."
- On-page shortcuts: `/` (search), `Tab`/arrow keys (navigate), `Enter` (open), `Ctrl`/`Cmd`+`Enter` (open in new tab), `Escape` (clear/close).
- Optional right-click context menu entry to save pages to a group.

### Account, sync, and backups
- Free account or Speed Dial 2 Pro ($12/year).
- Cross-device sync: sign in on all devices; first sync offers merge or replace (Pro).
- Automatic backups roughly every 24 hours, downloadable as JSON and restorable (Pro).
- Export/Import: all users can export all data (bookmarks, groups, preferences, thumbnails) to a JSON file; import replaces all existing data.
- Mobile app: a Progressive Web App for iOS and Android that syncs with desktop in real time (Pro).

### Privacy
- No analytics or tracking code; no user behavior is monitored, recorded, or sold.
- Free users' data is stored locally in the browser; Pro users' data syncs to speeddial2.com over HTTPS.
- Minimal-permission design: only the necessary permissions are requested, optional features prompt for permission only when used, and permissions can be revoked anytime.
- GDPR/CCPA aligned: users can export and delete their data; only an account email is collected (Pro).
